POKER RIDE-A-THON 2007 ~ Sunday, June 24th, 2007 COLDSTREAM RANCH

NORTH OKANAGAN THERAPEUTIC RIDING ASSOCIATION SADDLES UP FOR 16th ANNUAL RIDE-A-THON
Each year local equestrians young and old and from all disciplines and backgrounds, hit the trails of Coldstream Ranch and Kal Lake Park for the North Okanagan Therapeutic Riding Association’s annual fundraising event. This year NOTRA’s 16th annual Ride-A-Thon will take place on Sunday, June 24th, 2007.

For the past few years NOTRA has run the ride on the very popular “Poker Ride” format. Riders register and turn in their pledges starting at 9:00am at the beautiful and rustic Coldstream Ranch Chalet. Riders then head out onto the flagged and mapped trails no earlier than 10:00am. Throughout the ride there are seven stations for the riders to collect their playing card (sealed in an envelope) for their poker hand. The ride travels through the Coldstream Ranch into Kal Lake Park, down to Cosens Bay then back to the Ranch through Bear Valley and past Deep Lake. At a leisurely pace the ride is about three hours … much faster for the “speed demons”!

Once back at the Chalet, riders settle their horses at their trailers, them come and open up the envelopes with their cards in them in front of the scrutineer, using 5 of their 7 cards to make the best poker hand that they can. After poker hands are recorded, riders enjoy a barbeque lunch during which presentations are made for the greatest number of pledges brought in by an adult, by a junior, for the two best poker hands and then the grand prize draw will be made. There will be many door prizes as well for participants who have collected pledges.

Pledge forms can be found in local tack and feed stores or can be sent to you by getting in touch with Dani at 549-0105 or gvarabians@telus.net. The entry fee for the ride is $25 but it is free if you collect $50 or more in pledges. For every $50 in pledges raised a ballot will be entered in the rider’s name for the Grand Prize Draw. We encourage everyone to make the extra effort and collect the pledges as this is what the ride is all about. This is NOTRA’s largest single fundraiser of the year and all of the money raised goes directly to providing horseback riding lessons for mentally and physically disabled children and adults in the North Okanagan. Our board works hard to round up really terrific incentive prizes for the riders who collect pledges and the local private and business community are unbelievably generous in providing them.

Plan to gather a group of friends and come out and have fun! Enjoy a leisurely ride and take in the beautiful scenery on a historic ranch that is no longer open to the public. Above all else … be a part of putting a smile on the face of a disabled rider. See you on the 24th!

IPE BOOTH AND DEMONSTRATIONS - Wednesday, August 29th, 2007 - Sunday, September 2nd, 2007 ~ Come visit NOTRA's booth and watch demonstrations of what our program offers, featuring NOTRA horses and NOTRA riders all throughout the IPE.

NOTRA 2008 CALENDAR SALE - starting Wednesday, August 29th, 2007 ~ A gorgeous calendar featuring NOTRA horses and NOTRA riders will begin being offered for sale as a fundraiser for the program.

FALL VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION - tentatively Thursday, September 6th, 2007, 7:00pm at our facilities at O'Keefe Ranch. FALL SESSION 2007 - September 10th, 2007 through October 26th, 2007

NOTRA would like to extend a huge Thank You to everyone who made our 15th Annual Poker Ride-A-Thon such an overwhelming success! Eighty-three riders turned out on June 25th and raised just under $5,000.00 to help NOTRA to continue to provide horseback riding lessons for physically and or mentally challenged children and adults in the North Okanagan.
